From September to December 2013, a staff member at a university in Yokohama, Japan, Kiyoshi Jumura, used his home computer and 3D printer to create gun parts made of resin material and assembled them into two handguns.
In November 2013, the man involved in the case, Jumura Jiazhi, stated on social media that "although the transformation has been carried out in accordance with the Gun and Knife Law, there is still a risk of being searched by the police, but this is a meaningful behavior" and "I want to test shoot Japan's first 6-shot 3D printed revolver", implying that a test shot video will be released. Kimura subsequently uploaded a shooting video of a homemade revolver on a video website. After obtaining these clues in 2014, the Kanagawa police immediately launched an investigation into them.
In April 2014, Kiichi Jumura was found holding these firearms at home.
On October 20, 2014, the Yokohama District Court in Japan ruled on the case of former university employee Yumura Kazuchi accused of violating the Gun and Knife Act and the Weapons and Other Manufacturing Act by using a 3D printer to make a handgun. The defendant was sentenced to two years in prison. The prosecution is seeking a sentence of 3 years and 6 months. In the summary statement, the prosecution pointed out that the defendant publicly disclosed gun manufacturing methods and 3D data online, and the misuse of 3D printers may fundamentally subvert social security maintained through gun control, with "significant criminal responsibility". The defense stated that "the defendant was not aware of his violation" and requested a suspended sentence.
In June 2022, an 18-year-old man in Australia was accused of using a 3D printer to create a fully functional gun at home, and was charged with gun related crimes.
On March 11, 2023 local time, at Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida, the world's first 3D printed rocket, the US relative space company's Terran One, failed multiple attempts to launch, forcing the rocket to be delayed again in less than a week.
